Stainless steel end caps that fit string are small, metal finishing components primarily used in jewelry making, crafts, and light-duty rigging. They provide a durable, rust-resistant, and aesthetically pleasing finish for cords, giving a secure attachment point for a clasp or connector.
Common types for a 5mm string
  • Barrel or column end caps: These are tube-shaped and are one of the most common types for round cords. The 4mm inner diameter creates a snug fit for your string. They can feature a small loop on the end for attaching a clasp or jump ring.
  • Crimp-style end caps: Similar to the barrel type but with a slit, these are designed to be gently crimped with pliers after the cord is inserted to create a tighter, more secure hold.
  • Clamshell bead tips: These are small, open end caps used to hide knots at the end of beaded strands. They are a different style from a full barrel end cap, but can also be used to finish thin cords.
  • Bayonet clasps: These incorporate the end cap and clasp into a single component. A 5mm-hole bayonet clasp provides a clean, secure closure for leather or rubber cords, making it ideal for bracelets and necklaces.
Materials and durability
  • Stainless steel: As the name suggests, these end caps are highly resistant to rust, corrosion, and discoloration. This makes them suitable for jewelry that may be exposed to water or wear and tear over time.
  • Grade 304 vs. 316: Jewelry-grade stainless steel is often offered in Grade 304 or 316.
    • Grade 304 is a good, general-purpose stainless steel.
    • Grade 316 is a higher grade that includes molybdenum, which gives it superior corrosion resistance, making it suitable for high-humidity or marine environments.
  • Plated stainless steel: Some stainless steel end caps are plated with gold, silver, or other finishes to provide a different color while retaining the durability of the base material.
How to attach the end caps
For most styles of 5mm cord end caps, you will need an adhesive for a strong, lasting hold.
  1. Prepare the cord: If the cord is multi-stranded, you can apply a bit of glue to the very end to prevent fraying and help it slide into the cap.
  2. Apply adhesive: Place a small amount of strong adhesive, such as E-6000 or a jewelry epoxy, inside the end cap. A toothpick is useful for this step.
  3. Insert the cord: Push the end of the 4mm string firmly into the end cap, twisting it slightly to evenly coat the surface with glue.
  4. Allow to dry: Let the end cap and cord dry completely according to the glue's instructions.
  5. Add a clasp: Use a jump ring to attach a clasp, such as a lobster or toggle clasp, to the loop on the end cap.
Common uses
  • Jewelry making: Finishing necklaces and bracelets made from leather, suede, hemp, or rubber cords.
  • Decorative crafts: Adding a clean finish to decorative cords on bags, tassels, or keychains.
  • Functional hardware: In some cases, for creating small slings or cable loops, especially where corrosion resistance is important.
