This is the second edition which revised the first edition published simultaneously in 1971 by the #Antiquarian #Horological Society (London) and Phillimore and Co (Chichester).

It is regarded as the standard work on English #church clocks. These types of clocks are also known as #turret #clocks by enthusiasts.  At the time of publication, the study of church clocks was a very neglected area of horology. As extensive as the work is, it is still an incomplete list of these types of clocks. At the time the second edition was published there were still many that had not been recorded.

The author was born in Oxford in 1889 and was educated at the City of Oxford School and St. Johns College. His degree was in Forestry. He worked for the Indian Forestry Service between 1911 and 1942 and published another definitive work The Ecology and Control of the Forest Insects of India and Neighbouring Countries. He was also Director of the Imperial Forestry Bureau from 1945 to 1947 when he finally retired.

He was at school with T.E. Lawrence (Lawrence of Arabia) and they were very great friends. They made an extensive study of the antiquities in the Oxford area and travelled together to France to study Crusader castles. Beeson made some of the sketches that Lawrence used in his thesis The influence of the Crusades on European Military Architecture to the end of the 12th Century, which was published in 1936 as Crusader Castles.
