Enkianthus campanulatus var. palibinii
10 seeds
Enkianthus campanulatus is a shrub for all seasons, it covers itself with thousands of delicate red colored blooms in the spring, and has rich green foliage for the summer which turns to a blaze of color in the autumn.

Enkianthus campanulatus is a deciduous shrub that originates from countries in north-east Asia and are found in the same kinds of places as rhododendrons in the wild. It is slow growing with an upright spreading habit and eventually growing to about 10 feet high. The tiny pendulous, bell-shaped flowers appear in May and June clustered in a raceme that numbers up to 15; these are, individually, 1/2 inch long and have a color of cream, with pale pink veins. Enkianthus campanulatus palibinii cultivar has dark red flowers.

The leaves are clustered at the end of the twigs, elliptic in shape, serrate, medium green to bluish green up to 3 inches long and 1inch wide, with hairs on the veins. In the autumn, these leaves turn to fiery shades of red and orange.
Site Requirements/ Soil tolerances: Easily grown in average, medium moisture, well-drained, acidic soils in full sun to part shade. Best in part shade. Prefers cool, moist, organically rich, peaty soils with a pH below 6.

Culture: Blooms on previous year's growth, so any pruning should be done immediately after flowering.

Uses: Specimen, group or mass in the landscape. Grow with rhododendrons which share the same acidic soil requirements. Shrub borders, foundations.
