Entandrophragma caudatum Seeds

Entandrophragma is a genus of eleven species of deciduous trees in the mahogany family Meliaceae, restricted to tropical Africa. At least some of the species attain large sizes, reaching 40–50 m tall, exceptionally 60 m, and 2 m in trunk diameter. The leaves are pinnate, with 5-9 pairs of leaflets, each leaflet 8–10 cm long with an acuminate tip. The flowers are produced in loose inflorescences, each flower small, with five yellowish petals about 2 mm long, and ten stamens. The fruit is a five-valved capsule containing numerous winged seeds.

Entandrophragma caudatum commonly known as Wooden Banana is a deciduous tree up to 30 m tall. The bole can be up to 2 m in diameter and is usually without buttresses. The bark is flaking in large irregular scales, leaving buff coloured patches. Capsule pale brown, cylindric, the valves dehiscing from the tip, the dangling seeds attached by the ends of the wings. Much of the prime forest habitats have been lost through inundation (Lake Kariba), large and small scale agriculture. The trees growing on rocky terrain are less vulnerable, but don’t achieve the size of trees on deep soil.
