Griet is lost in the woods. Her husband has chucked her out, she's lost her baby, she's even found herself with her head in the gas oven - but she hasn't lost her sense of humour. (So I didn't commit suicide - I spent the rest of the night cleaning the oven. I nearly suffocated on the fumes.) While she is trying to restart her life with the help of her friends, family, and a rather enigmatic therapist, she turns for comfort to the folk tales she inherited from her grandparents. These colour her whole life; she writes stories by day to earn her living, and by night to explore what is happening to her. But she is still afraid, and - to use one of the last swear words of the 20th century - alone.
Then she meets Adam, an angel disguised as a surfer. As free of inhibitions as the original man, he liberates Griet with a joyous eroticism she hadn't dreamt possible. With him the healing can begin. But life is not a fairy tale, however hard Griet tries to rewrite it as one.
