Equatoria vertel die verhaal van Willis Reed, 'n Britse dierkundige wat aan Oxford 'n fassinasie met die okapi ontwikkel, daardie sku dier van Afrika se reënwoude. Saam met sy vriend, Guy Nichols, 'n insektekundige, lei hy 'n ekspedisie na die Kongo op soek na een van dié diere vir Antwerpen se dieretuin. Maar die Kongo staan onverskillig teenoor hom en sy begeertes, en 'n botsing tussen werklikheid en illusie word onvermydelik. Terwyl hy voortstry, omgeef in drome waarby hy mettertyd ook die beeldskone Alice de Quincy betrek, dwaal hy al verder weg van alles wat hy tot nou toe geken het. Die oerwoud sal hom en sy manne tot die uiterste toets, en leer dat die paadjies van die kop meer bedrieglik is as enige bos.
