Eragon (PSP) Review

Based on the 2006 fantasy film and the popular novel by Christopher Paolini, Eragon for the PSP is an action-adventure game developed by Amaze Entertainment. It attempts to capture the epic journey of a young farm boy turned Dragon Rider, blending melee combat, light puzzle-solving, and on-rails dragon sequences. Unfortunately, much like its film counterpart, it falls short of its grand ambitions.

Gameplay & Mechanics

FeatureDescriptionVerdict
CombatBasic hack-and-slash melee system with light combos and magic.Repetitive and shallow, with little variety.
Magic & AbilitiesOffers limited use of spells for ranged attacks and puzzles.Underutilized and lacking depth.
Dragon RidingIncludes a few scripted flying missions on Saphira.A nice change of pace but very linear.
ProgressionLinear level design with basic objectives and mild exploration.Straightforward but uninspired.

Gameplay is functional but unremarkable, offering minimal challenge or evolution.

Story & Narrative

  • Plot: Closely follows the events of the film, condensing the story of Eragon and his dragon, Saphira.

  • Narrative Depth: Characters and plot points are rushed and lack emotional weight.

  • Dialogue: Simplistic and often forgettable, failing to capture the charm of the source material.

  • Faithfulness: Attempts to hit key movie beats, but the storytelling feels hollow.

Storytelling feels more like a checklist than an immersive fantasy journey.

Visuals & Presentation

  • Graphics: Decent for the PSP, with basic character models and environments.

  • Design: Environments are bland and repetitive, lacking visual flair.

  • Cutscenes: Static and minimal, mostly using in-game graphics.

  • Performance: Runs smoothly, though occasional camera issues occur.

Visual presentation is serviceable but not particularly memorable.

Sound & Music

  • Sound Effects: Basic slashing and magic sounds; nothing dynamic.

  • Voice Acting: Limited and often low-energy, lacking the movies emotional punch.

  • Music: Attempts to mirror the films score, but loops are short and repetitive.

Audio does little to enhance immersion or tension.

Pros & Cons

Pros

  • Includes dragon-flying levels for variety

  • Decent length for a movie tie-in

  • Accessible gameplay for younger players

  • Follows the general outline of the Eragon story

Cons
Shallow, repetitive combat and level design
Lacks the depth and emotion of the novel or film
Uninspired visuals and static environments
Weak audio presentation and limited voice work

Final Verdict

Eragon (PSP) is a by-the-numbers movie tie-in that offers a passable, if forgettable, action experience. While younger fans of the franchise might enjoy brief moments of dragon riding and simple combat, it lacks the magic and depth of its fantasy roots. As with many licensed games of its era, it serves more as a marketing extension than a standalone adventure.

Score: 5.5 / 10 Playable but bland. A missed opportunity for a more magical adaptation.
