Netsuke are intricate carvings that served as clothing toggles in Japan for over 300 years, for functional and aesthetic purposes. Kimono had no pockets so men held their tobacco pouches etc. on a silk cord from their obi (sash). The netsuke slid onto the cord and secured it in the obi. Netsuke have become an art form and highly collectible worldwide. Many of today's netsuke artists were apprenticed to great carvers and the skill & intricacy of their carving is highly prized.
