Reserve Bank Governor Tito Mboweni struck the first 50c coin, depicting a South African soccer player, on 6 May 2002 at the South African Mint in Pretoria.
Depicting a South African soccer player, this was the first time in the history of South Africa that a sporting theme appeared on a coin.
The South African Mint is honouring the sport of soccer, with a 50 cent coin currently in circulation being expanded with a collector’s series commemorating the 2010 World Cup.
The Mint says it brought out more than 9-million of the fifty cent coins to create awareness for the national soccer team, Bafana Bafana, on their 10th anniversary. It also honoured Bafana’s qualification for the 2002 Soccer World Cup hosted by Korea and Japan.
