This historic Ethiopian 50 Matonas (½ Birr) silver coin dated EE1923 (1931) was issued during the reign of Emperor Haile Selassie I, one of the most influential rulers in Ethiopian history.

Struck in nickel, the coin features on the obverse a dignified portrait of Haile Selassie I wearing the imperial crown, surrounded by Ethiopian script identifying the emperor.

The reverse displays the iconic Lion of Judah carrying a processional cross, the ancient symbol of the Ethiopian monarchy and the Solomonic dynasty. The denomination 50 Matonas appears below the lion.

Coins depicting the Lion of Judah are among the most recognisable African coin designs and remain popular with world coin collectors, African numismatics enthusiasts, and collectors of Ethiopian imperial history.

A classic early-20th-century African silver coin with strong historical appeal.
