Ethiopian prayer box necklace

Ethiopian silver necklace.   This is a very special piece of jewellery.  The cylindrical pendant served as storage for prayers - Ethiopian women would write their prayers down and carry it around their necks.  Ethiopia has a very long Christian history (since 300AD!) and many of its artefacts and jewellery are linked to the Christian faith. 

The cylinder measures 27 mm across.  As with all older Ethiopian pieces, the silver does not carry a makers mark or any other stamps.  Please remember that Ethiopia does not have a silver standard and that the quality of the silver is of unknown standard (most certainly below the 925 mark).  The value of this piece lies in its meaning and uniqueness -  a real collectors' item.
