Common Name: Ulmo Eucryphia cordifolia, commonly known as Ulmo is an evergreen scented flowering tree from the Andes in Chile and Argentina where it is found naturally from sea level to an altitude of 700 metres. It is threatened by logging and habitast loss in its native environment. In the wild Ulmo can grow to as much as 40 metres in time but in cultivation it rarely grows to more than a small tree. It has a delightful form and shape with attractive foliage. In the late summer and autumn it produces beautiful creamy white scented flowers to some 6 cm in width, usually in profusion. It is very popular with bees and butterflies. Ulmo is a good timber tree with the timber much sought after for its decay resistant qualities. It is a prized honey tree. Eucryphia cordifolia is a hardy species that does best in full sun to light shade in a rich, humussy soil with adequate water.
