The Exodus was a ship that held 300 Jewish children, orphaned by World War II and the Nazi destruction.
The ship was docked in Cyprus, and the British would not let more than its 'quota' leave for Palestine, which was under British rule.
Ari Ben Canaan, a freedom fighter, will not allow the children to return to the horrific conditions of the displaced persons camp, where the British had been keeping them. T
his incident sets in motion a series of events that depict the inhuman treatment of the Jewish people, and the triumphant founding of the state of Israel.
Although unwilling to get involved, and convinced that the British must be right, is Kitty Fremont, an American nurse who eventually does tend the sick children because of a young girl named Karen, who reminds her of her own dead daughter.
It is both through Karen's love for the land and Ari's commitment to the cause that Kitty begins to understand the worthiness of this fight, and discovers why she must choose sides.
And then there is Dov Landau, a young man, his family's only survivor of the Warsaw ghetto. He made the trip with Karen on The Exodus, but his fight becomes more dangerous, more fanatic than hers, and they must first grow apart before realizing their true feelings.
