The Kiwano, also known as the African horned melon or jelly melon, is an exotic fruit native to sub-Saharan Africa. Famous for its vibrant, spiky orange exterior and neon-green, jelly-like interior, it offers a refreshing, mildly sweet flavor that tastes like a blend of cucumber, banana, and lime.
Flavor Profile: The jelly and seeds inside taste mildly tangy and vegetal, resembling a cucumber with hints of banana and tropical fruit.
Nutrient Dense: It is highly hydrating due to its high water content, and is packed with Vitamin C, Vitamin A, iron, magnesium, and potassium.
How to Eat: Simply slice it in half and scoop out the bright green pulp with a spoon. You can eat the seeds (which are similar to cucumber seeds) and even the nutrient-rich, fibrous rind if the spikes are trimmed off.
Fun Facts: The Kiwano has made appearances in Hollywood as an alien fruit! It was featured in Star Wars: The Force Awakens (at Maz Kanata's castle) and as a "Golana Melon" in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine.
Desert Lifesaver: Because it grows on resilient drought-resistant vines, the Kiwano has been an important, natural water reservoir for indigenous populations and wildlife in the Kalahari Desert for thousands of years.
The outer rind of Kiwano melon is thick and covered with tiny spikes. Before it's ripe, the fruit is dark green, but as it ripens it turns Orange
