The Sense HAT is one of the greatest Raspberry Pi HATs (Hardware Attached on Top). It has a suite of on-board sensors that allow you to monitor pressure, humidity, temperature, orientation, and movement. Version 2 of the Sense HAT adds a colour and brightness sensor.

Updated for the latest Raspberry Pi devices and hardware, our new book Experiment with the Sense HAT, 2nd edition, is packed with a variety of projects and experiments to help you get to grips with this impressive device.

Get to know the Sense HAT and Astro Pi

What could be cooler than a science project? A science project that's also a space programme! The incredible Astro Pi project on board the ISS (International Space Station) is the inspiration behind the Sense HAT hardware.

In Experiment with the Sense HAT, 2nd edition, we explore Raspberry Pi's extraterrestrial mission. You'll discover how the board's motion and environmental sensors enable Raspberry Pi to perform experiments in orbit on the ISS. Add a copy to your basket.

Bringing things back down to Earth, we also help you figure out exactly what the Sense HAT is and how you can use it to make your projects and dreams a reality. It's a versatile and flexible bit of kit, with plenty of practical uses.

Fun projects! Magic 8 Ball, Pixel Pet, and Flappy Astronaut

We show you how to use the Sense HAT's features via a series of fun and whimsical projects. You'll learn how to use motion sensing to recreate a fortune teller inspired by the Magic 8 Ball (shake to wish), a Tamagotchi-style Pixel Pet, and your own space-themed version of Flappy Bird.

These projects make use of the Sense HAT's interactive LED pixel display, as well as its motion sensors and joystick. You'll learn how to control input and output and the HAT's various hardware attachments through a series of increasingly challenging (but perfectly doable) projects.

Sense and log data

Beyond the fun and games, there is a serious end to this. In Experiment with the Sense HAT, we look at capturing data using the various sensors that give the Sense HAT its name. You will capture information from the temperature, humidity, pressure, orientation, acceleration, and magnetic field sensors, and if you have a Sense HAT v2 the new colour sensor. You'll also discover how to log all this information in a manageable .csv file!
