"An account of a journey in the years 1861 and 1862 from Walvisch Bay, on the western coast, to Lake Ngami and the Victoria Falls."
First edition published 1864 by Longman, Green, Longman, Roberts, & Green. Rebound incorporating the original maroon covers with blind-stamped decorations front and rear, with a modern cloth spine with gilt titling. The replacement endpapers are of an appropriately coloured textured paper. Due to the ill health of the author on his return from South West Africa, an incomplete manuscript was submitted to the publishers and printers, that resulted in a pagination error. This was corrected by eventually inserting the missing part of the manuscript in the correct chronological position, headed chapter XV, but it was not possible to repaginate the entire manuscript before printing. In order to denote the mispaginated pages, these were printed in square brackets, from 390 to 457. Therefore the total of pages is xiv + 602 and not xiv + 535, as is the number of the last index page, and the index was reprinted to show the additional chapter. This is explained by the author's father in the preface. The folding sketch map showing the regions explored by Baines facing page 1 is present, though misfolded with a short side tear. The second folding map facing page 35 is also misfolded with a short tear along a fold. The third and final folding map facing page 224 is present and intact. The frontispiece chromo-lithograph portrait titled Regiment of Flamingoes-Swa-kop River is present and the tissue-guard is intact. all other wood engravings from original sketches are present.
