Many long held beliefs about animal behaviour have been challenged by the discoveries made by a new generation of naturalists using modern technology.
For many years it was asserted that animals acted almost entirely by instinct, and that intelligence played only a minor role in their behaviour.
Meticulous observation, however, now suggests that many many animals are in fact rational creatures, capable of making choices and decisions in matters that affect their lives - in building their homes, for instance, in finding food or in avoiding predators.
Moreover, it now appears that animals can learn from one another and pass on their wisdom to others of their species.
