SOME INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT GEODES: 1. Geodes are spherical to subspherical rock structures with an internal cavity lined with mineral materials. They have a durable outer wall that is more resistant to weathering than the surrounding bedrock. 2. The mineral lining the cavity is often a scintillating druse of tiny quartz crystals (DRUZY) underlain by multiple bands of translucent gray and white agate. Many are lined with more spectacular treasures like purple amethyst, opal and other rare minerals. 3. GEODES CAN BE FOUND IN VOLCANIC ROCKS WHEN GAS POCKETS IN THE BASALTIC FLOW are infilled with agate, quartz, opal and other material delivered by hydrothermal water or groundwater. 4. GEODES IN SEDIMENTARY ROCKS are usually found in limestones (Calcium presipitation in a shallow marine environment limestone contains the remains of dead organisms, it is considered an organic sedimentary rock.), dolomites (type of limestone), and calcareous shale. In these deposits a gas-filled void can serve as the opening for geode formation. Shells, tree branches, roots and other organic materials often decay away to leave a void for the formation of mineral materials. These cavities can be filled with quartz, opal, agate or carbonate minerals. They are generally smaller than the geodes formed in volcanic rocks. Small geodes are often sliced and polished. 4. Agate is a translucent variety of microcrystalline quartz. Agate generally forms by the deposition of silica from groundwater in the cavities of igneous rocks. The agate deposits in concentric layers around the walls of the cavity, or in horizontal layers building up from the bottom of the cavity. These structures produce the banded patterns that are characteristic of many agates. Some of these cavities are lined with crystals and those are known as geodes. Agate occurs in a wide range of colors, which include brown, white, red, gray, pink, black, and yellow. The colors are caused by impurities and occur as alternating bands within the agate. This banding gives many agates the interesting colors and patterns that make it a popular gemstone.
