WMF, a famous German metalware manufacturer, established its first glassworks in 1883 to produce glass inserts for their decorative metal items. After their original glass house was destroyed in WWI, a new one was built, leading to the development of unique art glass forms. Although their art glass production ceased around 1936, WMF continued to operate its glassworks, eventually closing down its art glass production in 1982.

In 1880 there was an amalgamation of Straub & Sohn and A Ritter & Co. and the factory became famous for domestic and art metalware with an appropriate change of name to Würtemburgische Metallwaren Fabrik AG. After 170 years the company is still in business and is world famous for their high quality silverware.
