Description: EXTREMELY RARE Vintage Arabia Finland "Anemone" Oval Lidded Butter Dish
BRAND NOTICE: Selling online nationwide under our official brand name. Inventory is updated daily and live stock availability depends entirely on current store inventory across platforms.
This original 1960s mid-century lidded oval server showcases the iconic, deeply saturated cobalt blue "Anemone" pattern hand-painted on a signature grey-white stoneware base. Designed by ceramic pioneer Ulla Procopé, the heavy vitrified body features bold, fluid floral brushstrokes across the domed lid and a solid accent band running along the wide rim flange of the base container, all covered in a high-gloss glaze that reflects ambient room lighting beautifully. The structural oval form features a stable, nested lid seat, demonstrating premier Scandinavian functionalism.
Arabia Finland's "Anemone" series stands as a globally recognized benchmark of mid-century Scandinavian studio pottery, celebrating the integration of thick, robust stoneware with hand-applied artisanal detailing. The distinctive glaze application involved paint-decoration directly onto unglazed bisqueware before applying a protective clear overglaze, creating a permanent, scratch-proof layer that locks in the deep iron-and-cobalt blue pigmentation.
The base features the authentic hand-painted underglaze signature "ARABIA FINLAND" alongside the professional artist initials "UP/KO" in deep indigo script.
Made in Finland, circa 1962-1974, making this butter dish 52+ years old.
Did you know? Because every piece in the iconic Arabia Finland "Anemone" collection was painted completely by hand in the Helsinki studios, no two brushstrokes are identical. Master glaze decorators used thick ox-hair brushes to sweep the concentrated cobalt across the spinning pottery wheels, resulting in small, beautiful natural variations in transparency and depth that allow discerning collectors to trace the unique touch of the individual artisan.
Approximate Dimensions: Height 7.5cm, Length 17.5cm, Width 12cm.
Condition: Excellent vintage condition.
Visible Flaws: The interior and exterior surfaces are exceptionally clean with zero post-production usage scratches, cloudiness, or grey metal utensil marks, indicating this piece likely remained unused. The outer margins show no chips, fractures, or cracks. The inner lip rim of the lid features a small, minor unglazed indent point from production where the clear glaze pooled thinly over the raw clay body during the kiln firing process.
