EyeToy Play: Astro Zoo (PS2) Review

EyeToy Play: Astro Zoo is one of the later entries in the EyeToy series, offering a colourful, energetic set of mini-games aimed primarily at kids and families. It leans heavily on the novelty of motion-controlled gameplay using the EyeToy camera, wrapping everything in a light space-themed zoo adventure.

Gameplay & Mechanics

Astro Zoo keeps the familiar EyeToy formula: you interact by moving your body or waving your arms in front of the camera. Accuracy is dependent on lighting conditions and camera positioning, and while it works well enough for younger players, adults may find the detection inconsistent.

Mini-games involve feeding animals, repairing enclosures, cleaning habitats, rescuing escaped creatures, and completing small reflex-based challenges. Gameplay is simple and designed for short, repeated bursts rather than long sessions.

There is very little depth, but for its intended audience, it provides energetic, silly fun.

Career & Progression

There is no traditional career mode. You progress by completing sets of mini-games and restoring different sections of the Astro Zoo. Unlocks are mostly cosmetic or new minigames, keeping progression light and child-friendly.

Modes & Features

  • Story/Adventure Mode: Move through different zones of the space zoo and complete tasks.

  • Party Mode: The strongest feature supports multiple players taking turns, perfect for family gatherings.

  • Training/Free Play: Play unlocked mini-games individually.

The value of the game depends entirely on social play; solo players will quickly run out of steam.

Graphics & Presentation

Bright, cartoon-styled visuals give the game a cheerful, inviting look. Animal designs are cute and engaging, and environments are colourful without being overwhelming.

Animations are basic, but the art direction suits the family demographic. The UI is extremely simple and easy to understand, ideal for kids.

Sound & Commentary

Sound effects are playful and exaggerated, matching the theme perfectly. Music loops are upbeat and non-intrusive, though not particularly memorable.

Voice lines and instructions are delivered clearly important given the target audience.

Final Verdict

EyeToy Play: Astro Zoo is a fun, energetic mini-game collection best suited to families with young children. It thrives as a party game and a novelty experience, but lacks depth and variety for older players or long-term replayability.

If you own an EyeToy and want something light-hearted for groups or kids, this is a solid pick. If youre looking for precision controls or deep gameplay, you wont find it here.

Pros

  • Simple, accessible motion-based gameplay

  • Colourful, friendly presentation

  • Great for parties and kids

  • Lots of silly, physical fun

Cons

  • Motion detection can be inconsistent

  • Very shallow gameplay

  • Little replay value for adults

  • Limited content outside party settings

Recommendation

Recommended for families and young players who want a playful, active mini-game experience.
Not recommended for solo players or those looking for depth or accurate motion gameplay.
