Frans Claerhout , recently died age 83. He describes himself as "full of misery" as after a heart operation he hasn't been able to paint as much as he would have liked. "My intellect wants it but my body refuses," said this charismatic churchman.
Belgian born, Father Claerhout came to South Africa in 1946 and started his distinguished career near Krugersdorp before moving to Bloemfontein two years later. He retired on his mission station in Tweespruit. "Ja, I'm almost a lifelong Vrystaater," he chuckles gutturally. Much of his work emotively captures the simple tribal scenes that often surrounded him. "I think an artist should paint things and people where he lives," he said. "I started drawing little African children as I had to learn the language." His bronze sculptures are less well known but are immaculately rendered and, today, almost priceless. "I tried to do some more oils at Christmas," the priest use to say. Today he is an art icon, "but these days about the most I can do are a drawing."
F Claerhout are one of the few South African artists that are know as international artists.
