FABLED MASAI KENYA 3-PIECE LION SPEAR OVER 2M LONG! 3RD OF 3 ON AUCTION

THIS IS A FABLED VINTAGE 3 PIECE SPEAR OF THE MASAI TRIBE IN KENYA AND TANZANIA. THE SPEAR IS MADE FROM 3 INTERCONNECTING PIECES AND STANDS OVER 2M HIGH WHEN CONNECTED. THE LARGE HEAVY IRON SPEARHEAD HAS BEEN DESIGNED SPECIFICALLY TO DEFEND AGAINST AND BRING DOWN LIONS. IT IS VINTAGE IN AGE AS CAN BE SEEN BY SOME WEAR.
 
Traditionally, the spear has long been the weapon of choice of the Maasai. It is used to defend cattle, community and the warrior himself against wild animals and invaders. Constructed from wood and iron, it is deemed to be the single most valued personal possession after livestock.

ITS DIFFERENT TO THE OTHER 2 SPEARS ON AUCTION. IT SEEMS THEY MADE DIFFERENT SPEARS WITH DIFFERENT BALANCING POINTS. SME ARE MORE SUITED TO STABBING WHILE OTHERS MIGHT BE MORE SUITED TO THROWING. THIS SPEAR IS AN AMAZING WEAPON THAT IS EASY TO USE AND TRAVEL WITH - BETTER THAN ANY OTHER SPEARS I HAVE HAD!

 
MASAI SPEARS:
A symbol of power and strength for the proud Maasai people of East Africa is their elegant war spear. This fabled implement of the mature Maasai Moran or warrior is one of the most distinctive spears in the world with its long, narrow blade, short wooden handle and heavy counterbalancing butt spike or shoe. The spear is a warrior's most precious possession and never leaves his hand except to rest point up in the earth at his side. Actually, many Maasai develop such faith in the lethal power of their spear that they even traditionally exspected young Maasai to kill a lion single-handedly with their spear to prove their worth and manhood.
Each spear is carefully cold-forged of high carbon steel and mated with a stout ash wood handle and sturdy counterbalancing spike. When fully assembled, it measures 2m long.
The Maasai spear consists of three part: First the blade itself is forged with a thick reinforcing rib that runs down the center almost to the very tip. Second is the wooden shaft with a double taper which fits into twin sockets connecting butt and blade. Third is the heavy solid steel butt spike that is also heat-treated to a hard spring temper, just like the fearsome blade. This butt spike serves a second purpose, as its pointed tip can be used in lieu of the blade when practicing, thereby preserving the sharp edge of the spear. When fully assembled, these three components form a ferociously effective weapon!
