Fabulous Antique English Silver Box (1902)
This wonderful, superb quality, English hallmarked sterling silver box has been exceptionally well-made with wonderful decoration and was produced in Birmingham in 1902 by silversmiths 'Henry Matthews' (HM). It has a very attractive shape with an unusual three sided, domed and sprung, hinged lid, with an amazing clasp and stands on four short legs. The box is fitted with a hinged, cut-out swing catch, that clips onto a small cabochon-cut blue sapphire stone set onto the side of the lid. When the clasp is lifted, it releases the sprung lid which reveals a wooden lined interior. Most of the lid has a lovely, wavy engine-turned decoration with beautifully engraved flowers and scroll work on the ends and centres. This wonderful box is in excellent condition and would make an ideal jewellery or trinket box for a dressing table. It measures 12cm x 9cm, stands 5,3cm high and weighs 296,4g.
