"Face/Off" follows FBI Special Agent Sean Archer (played by John Travolta), who is on a relentless quest to capture Castor Troy (played by Nicolas Cage), a sadistic terrorist responsible for the death of Archer's young son. After years of pursuit, Archer finally apprehends Troy, but the victory is short-lived as Troy falls into a coma after a confrontation. Before losing consciousness, Troy reveals that he has planted a bomb in Los Angeles, and only his brother, Pollux, knows its location.
To extract this information, Archer undergoes a radical surgical procedure that allows him to assume Troy's identity, complete with his face, voice, and mannerisms. However, when Troy unexpectedly awakens from his coma, he undergoes the same surgery to take Archer's face, leading to a chaotic identity swap. Now, Troy, disguised as Archer, infiltrates the FBI and wreaks havoc on Archer's personal life, while Archer, trapped in Troy's body, must navigate the criminal underworld to reclaim his identity and stop Troy's plans.
