Weird Face Shaped Raku Like Glazed Ceramic Sculpture Vase Signed PAUL (Possible Paul de Jongh)
THIS IS AN INTERESTING AND WEIRD LOOKING RAKU LIKE SCULPTURE / VASE. IT IS SIGNED PAUL ON THE INSIDE WHICH I THINK ALTHOUGH UNCONFIRMED MIGHT BE A PAUL DE JONGH (HIGHLY REGARDED SA POTTER) WORK.
THIS GLAZED BODY OF THE SCULPTURE HAS A VEINED SCARLIKE FACE WITH SLIM ELONGATED NOSE AND SMALL LIPS. IT HAS NO EYES WHICH IS DIFFERENT TO THE ONLY OTHER SIMILAR ONE I COULD FIND ONLINE. THE UNGLAZED TO BANDED RIM AND BOTTOM HAS SOME STYLIZED GEOMETRIC LINES SIMILAR TO AFRICAN ART MOTIVES.
Paul de Jongh's ceramics are primarily known for his specialization in wood firing and high-temperature reduction firing techniques, which impart a similar Raku like glaze character to his work. Wood firing is a complex, multi-day process where ash from the burning wood settles on the pottery, creating natural, often subtle, glaze variations which is apparent on our sculpture at the back as well. His style also falls within an "Afro-Oriental" blend, which emphasizes clean simplistic africanizing forms.
I FOUND ONE SIMILAR SCULPTURE ONLINE WITH THE ONLY DIFFERENCE THAT IT HAD SOME EYES. IT SOLD FOR $1 387 ONLINE. I WILL ATTACH A PICTURE.
SIZE: 32CM HIGH 11CM WIDE 16CM DEEP
CONDITION: GLAZE CHIP ON NOSE. OTHERWISE IN GOOD CONDITION.
NOTE I HAVE VARIOUS INTERESTING ITEMS ALSO ON AUCTION THIS WEEK INCLUDING 3 OTHER NEVER SEEN BEFORE RAKU FIGURINES.
