The novel opens in 1946, when Franny Healy is a beautiful and spirited teenager living in poverty in Ireland. When she discovers she is pregnant, her boyfriend abandons her. Undeterred, Franny flees to the city, where she ends up being a famous film actress known as Frances Fitzgerald. She keeps Cara, her daughter, whom she left with her mother, a secret. After her grandmother dies, Cara is sent to an orphanage run by a sadistic Mother Superior. She eventually escapes and starts looking for her mother.
