About the Book
A foundational work in systemic psychotherapy, Family Therapy Techniques codifies the clinical methods developed by Salvador Minuchin, one of the most influential family therapists of the twentieth century. Drawing on his pioneering structural approach, Minuchin in collaboration with H. Charles Fishman articulates the precise manoeuvres and interpretive strategies that constitute effective family treatment.

The authors guide practitioners through each stage of the therapeutic process: joining the family system, diagnosing relational structures, reframing interactional patterns, and orchestrating change through enactment and boundary shifts. Richly illustrated with session transcripts, the book offers not only practical instruction but also a philosophy of therapeutic engagement grounded in empathy, adaptability, and systemic insight.

Serving as a companion to Minuchins earlier Families and Family Therapy (Harvard, 1974), this volume became a cornerstone text in both clinical education and the applied practice of family systems therapy, influencing generations of therapists worldwide.

About the Authors
Salvador Minuchin, M.D. (19212017) was Director of the Family Therapy Training Center at the Philadelphia Child Guidance Clinic and Professor of Child Psychiatry and Pediatrics at the University of Pennsylvania. His integrative, experiential approach to structural family therapy redefined clinical intervention and remains a central paradigm in psychotherapeutic training.
H. Charles Fishman, M.D. served as Director of Training at the Philadelphia Child Guidance Clinic and Assistant Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Pennsylvania. His later work expanded Minuchins systemic methodology into trauma and adolescent psychiatry.
