DESCRITPITON

Set in a rural Swedish town in 1907, the film tells the story of one year in the lives of the colorful Ekdahl family.

Christmastime, 1907. The Ekdahl family, a wealthy and boisterous clan, has assembled in Grandmother Helena's home for the holidays. Christmas for 8-year-old Fanny and 10-year-old Alexander is filled with magic, enchantment, and mystery. But for Grandma Helena, it's just another occasion to worry. When she's not spending time with her close friend Isak Jacob, she broods over her sons, Oscar, Carl, and Gustav. A theater manager, Oscar's a devoted husband to Emilie and a loving father to Fanny and Alexander. But when he dies, their mother marries a puritanical minister with antiquated views on child-rearing. Now it's up to Helena to assure that Fanny and Alexander aren't shut away in a nursery that's more like a prison than a playground.

Ingmar Bergman Filmography

Reviews
Fanny and Alexander is one of the more upbeat and accessible films from Ingmar Bergman. This autobiographical story follows the lives of two children during one tumultuous year. After the death of the children's beloved father, a local theatre owner, their mother marries a strict clergyman. Their new life is cold and ascetic, especially when compared to the unfettered and impassioned life they knew with their father. Most of the story is seen through the eyes of the little boy and is often told in dreamlike sequences. Colourful, insightful, and optimistic, this is far less grim than most of Bergman's work. It was awarded four of the six Oscars for which it was nominated in 1984, including Best Foreign Language Film. Though this was announced as his last film, Bergman continued to work into the late 1990s, though mostly for Swedish television.

1 CUSTOMER REVIEW:
This is Ingmar Bergman at his best and most accessible. The film literally glows and the DVD version does this quality justice.
It is a very long film (5 hours), so watch it over two sessions. I guarantee after watching the first disc you will hardly be able to wait to see the second. One can only echo the quote from The Times 'Extraordinary cinematic magic'.
