The fleshy, bright green leaves of these southern African plants are semicylindrical or triangular in shape and nearly all are tipped with short teeth, giving rise to their common names of tiger's jaws. After only about two years, large, stemless, bright yellow daisylike flowers grow form the center of each rosette in autumn and open in full sun. The plants start growing in early spring or in early summer and fall dormant after flowering. To avoid risk of rot, take care not to overwater the plants.
