FEATHERS OF KNYSNA:
FEATHERS OF KNYSNA WAS RENOWNED FOR IT'S LIMITED EDITION CARVED WOODEN BIRDS.
WHAT MAKES THESE BIRDS UNIQUE IS THAT EACH ONE OF THEM IS HANDMADE FROM THE CARVING TO THE PAINTING.  IN APRIL 2016, THE FEATHERS OF KNYSNA OWNERS RETIRED AND CLOSED THE FACTORY.

These carved wooden birds were from the famous FEATHERS OF KNYSNA GALLERY. The town of Knysna was famous for its many art galleries to include the Feathers Gallery. These Feathers birds were part of a conservation awareness program/campaign aimed at improving the lot for urban and wild birds and a percentage of the price went towards Bird Sanctuary Awareness. At one time Feathers of Knysas birds were sold in galleries in the US, Europe, as well as Africa. These original collectibles have become scarce and hard to find. Each bird is hand carved and painted/stained and are buffed to retain the natural wood luster and bring out the detail in the wood grain. They are limited editions and each bird is numbered.

KNYSNA LOERIE:

The Knysna turaco (Tauraco corythaix ), or as Is called in South Africa the Knysna Loerie is a large green bird with a short hooked bill and brilliant red wings. The bill is short, deep and sharply curved and is orange-red. The eye is brown and the eye-ring deep red. There is a white line just under the eye, which extends behind the eye. It has a long and heavy tail, which is mostly green - the wing coverts are a darker metallic green. It has a tall green crest, which is tipped distinctly with white. Males and females are very similar and difficult to tell apart but for the female being a little smaller with duller coloured feathers.

Turacos are the only birds to possess true red and green colors. When you look at most birds, the color you are seeing is a reflection produced by the feather structure. The turaco's red pigment (turacin) and green pigment (turacoverdin) both contain copper. In fact, if you stirred a glass of water with a red turaco feather, the water would turn pink!
Knysna turacos are monogamous and form pairs. The female lays 2 eggs in a shallow platform nest made from sticks and placed in a tree or clump of creepers. The eggs are incubated by both parents within 20-24 days. Turaco chicks are born with thick down and open, or nearly-open, eyes. When they leave the nest the chicks have claws on the wings that help them climb on branches and through vegetation.
THE KNYSNA LOURIE IS FOUND ONLY IN SOUTH AFRICA AND PARTICULARLY IN THE KNYSNA AREA OF THE GARDEN ROUTE. THEY CAN LIVE UP TO 30 YEARS IN CAPTIVITY.
