Ficus is a pan-tropical genus of about 850 species of woody trees, shrubs, vines, epiphytes and hemiepiphytes in the family Moraceae. Ficus occupies a wide variety of ecological niches; most are evergreen, but some deciduous species are endemic to areas outside of the tropics and to higher elevations. Fig species are characterized by their unique inflorescence and distinctive pollination syndrome, which utilizes wasp species belonging to the Agaonidae family for pollination. The fruit of most species are edible though they are usually of only local economic importance or eaten as bushfood. However, they are extremely important food resources for wildlife. Figs are also of considerable cultural importance throughout the tropics, both as objects of worship and for their many practical uses.

Ficus benjamina commonly known as Weeping Fig Tree really needs no introduction. We have all seen them in abundance as an indoor houseplant feature. Fast-growing, this is a huge tree outdoors in ideal conditions, growing to 20 meters in height and 20 to 30 meters in width. The dense, rounded canopy and gracefully drooping branches of Weeping Fig have traditionally made it popular as a landscape tree for larger sites, its tolerance of pruning and shaping make it excellent as a trained standard, topiary, bonsai, espalier, screen or hedge and its ability to take low light situations has made it a staple of the indoor plants. Young plants make excellent tub or container plants. It makes an excellent bonsai subject, either indoors or out. The thick, shiny, 5 to 10 cm long, evergreen leaves generously clothe the long branches, and the tiny figs eventually turn a deep red. It is normally single-trunked with attractive silver-grey bark, although it will produce aerial roots in time. Once Ficus benjamina has become acclimatized to its final resting place very little effort is needed to maintain a good looking and healthy specimen. Weeping Fig will grow in full sun or partial shade and low light in any well-drained soil.
