The Ficus Umbellata is one of the most striking ficus plants you can own. With its oversized, heart-shaped leaves and upright growth, it's a plant that looks impressive from day one. These are already beautifully grown specimens that will flourish with the right care especially with regular feeding to keep those big leaves healthy and strong.
These are large plants in 19cm pots.

Commonly known as: Ficus Umbellata
Botanical name: Ficus Umbellata
Ficus umbellata is an under-the-radar gem that's been gaining popularity for good reason. Its oversized, almost translucent green leaves have a gently undulating surface and pronounced veins, giving the plant a soft, whimsical feel. Unlike the more rigid, upright look of a fiddle leaf fig, umbellata has a looser, more relaxed shape that works beautifully in light-filled spaces.
Light requirements:
This plant loves bright, indirect light. A spot near an east- or north-facing window is ideal. It can handle a bit of morning or late afternoon sun, but avoid harsh midday rays, which may scorch the leaves. If it's not getting enough light, you'll notice slower growth and leaf drop.
💧 Watering:
Water when the top third of the soil has dried out. Ficus umbellata is somewhat drought-tolerant, so it's better to underwater slightly than to keep it constantly moist. In summer, this might mean watering weekly, but during the cooler months, it will slow right down. Always check before reaching for the watering can.
🌱 Soil & Repotting:
Use a well-draining mix to prevent soggy roots. For optimal drainage and healthy roots, you can use our premixed Aroid Mix, or create your own potting mix using Barks Unlimited Potting Soil combined with Perlite. Repot every year or two in spring when the plant becomes root-bound.
🌿 Humidity & Temperature:
It thrives in normal indoor humidity but appreciates the occasional boost, especially in winter. Temperatures between 1826°C are perfect. Avoid sudden drops or cold draughts, which can cause leaf drop.
🍃 Fertiliser (important!):
The Ficus Umbellata is a heavy feeder and relies on regular feeding to sustain its oversized leaves. We recommend using NovaTec High Nitrogen Soluble Fertiliser every 23 weeks during the growing season to keep foliage lush and strong. For long-term support, alternate with a Controlled Release Fertiliser or top up with an Organic Fertiliser. Without frequent feeding, Umbellatas often stall or produce smaller, weaker leaves.
🐛 Pests & Problems:
Watch out for scale, mealybugs, and spider mites. Regularly wipe the leaves with a damp cloth to keep them dust-free and inspect for pests. If needed, treat with an insecticidal spray.
Pruning & Propagation:
Ficus umbellata responds well to pruning if it gets leggy or if you'd like to shape it. Use clean, sharp scissors to cut just above a node. It can be propagated from stem cuttings, though it may take time to root. Patience is key.
