Volume 1 chiefly deals with the smaller republics of short duration. Nine chapters are devoted to the early Cape Colony, and the following seven to the Great Trek, and the Treks of Trichardt, Potgieter, Maritz and Retief, minor wars and the Volksraad of Winburg. Volume two focuses exclusively on Natal.

Two volume set published by C. Struik (Pty) Ltd., 1969, facsimile reprint number 461 of a limited edition of 750 copies in the Africana Collectanea series. Both volumes have jackets with only the fewest of creases of very limited extent. Red leather with gilt titling and publisher's logo stamped on the front. Two immaculate volumes marred only by endpaper tape residue left from the plastic covering that served to protect the jackets so well.
