Offered for sale is a stylish and hard to find Kalahari ceramic wall charger/wall plate dating from the 1950's depicting two Ndebele women with distinctive neck rings the figure on the right swathed in a voluminous lime green blanket with a diagonal border , the figure on the left nude holding a beer pot .This item is dinner-plate sized and made from a red bodied earthenware , hand decorated and painted .The figures are in low relief slightly raised above a matt black glazed background. The back of the plate is in satin black glaze and is indistinctly signed Kalahari made in S Africa. Kalahari ceramics are keenly collected in South Africa, Europe and the USA and are rightly regarded as the pinnacle of fine ceramics design in this country Mid-20th Century. Kalahari ceramics were made in the Cape, Constantia Hoek by a husband and wife team Aleksanders and Elma Klopkanov of Russian/Latvian descent. Both were highly qualified artists and ceramicists who pursued post graduate studies in Sweden. They emmigrated to South Africa in the late 1940's.
