Offered for sale is a fine and rare small Gouda PZH bottle vase in the Riouw pattern with a date mark for 1923. This is an elegant hand painted earthenware vase made in the famous Gouda district of the Netherlands by the company PZH Plateelbakkerij Zuid Holland .The vase is in the lovely Riouw pattern which features full blown flowers and buds with foliage in an unusual azure blue ; the flowers resemble peonies or poppies . The design is typical of the refined , highly decorative ,bold and unusual designs produced by the PZH company in the Art Deco period for which the company would achieve world wide acclaim. PZH innovated in the distinctive and unique design of floral motifs combined with abstract patterning usually offset against a black background with unusual colour combinations . The PZH company were the first Gouda company to move away from a high gloss glaze finish and to standardize their ceramic output with matte glazed designs. The base of the vase has hand painted and incised marks including the famous PZH logo/pictogram of a Little House, the country of origin Holland, the pattern name Riouw, the painters initials, the shape or form number and the date mark (superimposed double diamond mark)
