There are four complete sets of Strachan and Co offered for sale (Sixteen coins). This is the complete S&Co collection - images displayed below are the coins being sold.
Complete sets are rarely seen on auction or offered for sale. There are less than 70 complete sets of S&Co in existence.
The sets:
Set One: "S&Co" South Africa's first authenticated indigenous circulating currency - used widely across the East Griqualand region bordering southern Natal for almost 60 years. (1874-1932). The region they were accepted as currency was the size of Ireland. They were largely used and trusted by the local indigenous people including the Griqua.
All pieces are very rare and very collectable.
Set two: "S&Co MH" The extremely rare Mountain Home set which was minted in about 1878 especially for a cousin of the Strachan's at his "franchise" store. There are only about 100 pieces of EACH of the coins displayed below making this the hardest set to complete.

Set three: "S&Co In Goods" (with straight tail on "&") The older "In Goods" set minted about 1900. This includes the rarest of the Strachan coins - the 1/- (Only about 60 pieces known).
Set Four: "S&Co In Goods" (with curved tail on "&") The newer and more common "In Goods" set minted about 1907. All coins in above average condition.
Provinance: The set was acquired by Scott Balson when researching the book "Kence, the trade tokens of Strachan and Co".
THE BONUS:
The winner of this auction will also get an original copy of the book "Kence, the trade tokens of Strachan and Co" (cover of the 30 page book shown below). Less than two hundred copies exist and most are to be found in museums or specialist libraries, including those of prominent collectors. This book is, in itself, a highly sought after collectable. (NOTE: There is a slight coffee mug stain on the front cover but apart from that the internal contents are in perfect condition and without blemish).
