The Fluke 88V is a professional-grade automotive multimeter designed for diagnosing problems on both conventional and hybrid vehicles. It features a range of functions specific to automotive applications, in addition to standard multimeter capabilities.

Automotive-Specific Functions

RPM measurements: Measures engine revolutions per minute using an optional inductive pickup.

Pulse width measurements: Provides millisecond resolution for troubleshooting issues with fuel injectors and other components.

Duty cycle: Measures duty cycle in percentage.

Peak capture: Records transient events and voltage spikes as fast as 250 microseconds. This can be used to find EMI and RFI noise or defective clamping diodes.

Built-in thermometer: Allows for temperature readings, such as on a catalytic converter, with an optional temperature probe.

Input impedance: A 10 M input impedance prevents damage to sensitive vehicle computer systems.

General Multimeter Functions and Features

Measurement capabilities: The meter can measure AC and DC voltage up to 1000V, AC and DC current up to 10A continuously (or 20A for 30 seconds), resistance up to 50 M, capacitance, frequency up to 200 kHz, and continuity.

Display: Features a large, bright display with two backlight levels for visibility in a variety of working conditions. It has a 6,000-count display with a 4.5-digit mode for more precise measurements of up to 20,000 counts.

Analog bar graph: A 32-segment analog bar graph updates at 40 times per second, which is useful for observing fast-changing or unstable signals.

Recording features: Includes Min/Max/Average recording with an alert to automatically capture variations.

Relative mode: Allows for removing test lead resistance from low ohms measurements.

Ranging: Has both auto and manual ranging options.

Safety and durability: Built to withstand impulses over 8,000V and is independently tested to comply with CAT III 1000V and CAT IV 600V safety standards.

Convenience: Features a removable holster, a magnetic hanger for hands-free use, and an easy-access door for quick battery changes.
