THE HOUSEWIFE'S GUIDE
Department of Agriculture
6th Revised and Enlarged Edition, 1946
Hardcover, 294 pages.
Printed by the Government Printer of the Union of SA, Pretoria.
A fascinating and scarce book. Typical of government publications of the era, seeks to educate the housewife about nutrition and health. Excellent source of information on preserving and canning of vegetables, fruit, meat and poultry as well as many good recipes, including traditional South African ones.
There is also some humour to be found as well - eg; the book was compiled by the Home Economics Officers of the Division of Soil Conservation and Extension. In the credits at the back thanks is given to entities such as The Direct Tea Agency, The Natal Fisheries and last on the list is ' Some capable South African housewives'.
There is light foxing scattered throughout and light soiling from general use. Towards the back some pages are stained along the margins through moisture. Some pages have a light, soft, fold but I think this is from the original binding. Page ends are browned with some foxing Binding good - no loose pages. There are fold out showing the various meat cuts. These fold outs are dog-eared. Cloth cover (no d/j) is rubbed, worn and faded. Corners bumped and spine top and bottom soft.
