After the first democratic elections in South Africa, Nelson Mandela was sworn in as President of South Africa at the Union Buildings on 10 May 1994. In order to commemorate this historic occasion, the SA Mint struck 1742, 24 carat, 1oz gold coins. A smaller number of these coins were made available exclusively in the white box.
