FEP publications, softcover, illustrated, 48 pages, condition: as new.

Serious collectors of erotic art imagery will probably already have the majority of the images contained within these 48 pages -- and I would expect that several of those will be of a higher quality than what is available here.

For the average person, however, this book provides a nice uncensored cross-sample of some of the erotic paintings, sculptures, pottery and other art-forms which were commonplace in Pompeii back in 79 A.D. before the volcano Mount Vesuvius erupted and buried the city.

The book also contains a brief history of Pompeii, along with some general information of the people and lifestyles which characterized the area at that time. There is also further information on the collections which are included, as well as some specifics of the various items.

Sadly, the quality of the book is somewhat lacking. The large amount of typographical errors are distracting, and it is obvious that English is not the primary language of the writer -- but these factors are not an issue for me.

The graphics are my primary concern. Approximately one third of the images are in black and white, with the rest being in color. I find the choice of perspective of some of the photographs of the scultures to be a poor choice, and the clarity of some of the images is not sufficient. Please understand that I do not refer to the quality of the original artwork -- which must be expected to have suffered somewhat after over 19 centuries.

I find this very difficult to rate on a five-star scale. I think by its own merits that it deserves more than a three, but with some of its short-comings I cannot justify giving a four. I think I have no choice but to give this work a four, considering the disappointing lack of other serious efforts available in this valid but controversial realm of art.

I do state this... if I were ever to lose my current copy of this work I would definitely replace it.
