Fordhook Giant has a dark glossy green leaves. It takes 58 days to mature after seedling transplant. Stems are broad and white in colour. The leaves are deeply savoyed, and the leaf margins are rippled. This Swiss chard variety is the most commonly used variety in South Africa. In South Africa Swiss Chard is usually referred to simply as Spinach. Enjoy it like you would spinach or other greens, such as cut up in salads or sauted. This variety is both cold- and heat-tolerant.
Growing Fordhook Giant Swiss Chard
Sow Fordhook seeds in average soil in full sun as soon as ground can be worked or start the seeds indoors and transplant later.
Sow about 6 inches apart and cover with inch fine soil.
Firm lightly and keep evenly moist.
Seedlings emerge in 7-14 days.
Thin stand to about 12 inches apart when seedlings are 1-2 inches tall.
