2007. Soft cover; 192 pages. Very good condition. The cover is worn. Under 1kg.

The history of the grand pageant and the circus in South African theatre has produced a number of memorable characters--the latter part of the twentieth century, for example, was dominated by the Pagel, Boswell and Wilkie families. However, in many ways the remarkable British-born Frank E. Fillis and his family were not only one of the first, but certainly one of the most remarkable phenomena in South African theatre history. Fillis himself was far more than simply a circus-master. For example, he was also billed as a "showman, scout, horse trainer and world's traveller" in the popular press and a master of the equestrian pageant, in the mould of Buffalo Bill and others, who put on a popular Boer War Show in 1904. As Van der Merwe notes in this meticulous study of the life and times of the Fillis circus, for 30 years this had been "the largest and foremost entertainment in South Africa" and his impact on the South African entertainment industry was apparently profound.
