This is a photo of the complete painting. It is framed with a gold inner frame and an old ornate outside gold frame.

The photo above is a closer look at the signature of the artist.

Also know that the inner frame covers half the signature of the artist.

The artist ABBATE only signed the surname and did not date the painting. On the Internet the first Abbate artist was Niccole Dell' Abbate (1509 - 1571) who was an Italian Mannerist painter in fresco and oils. His great Nephew was Ercole Abbate (1575 - 1613) and was one of Niccole's pupils.  I mention this information but do not say it is one of their paintings.  On the internet today I pick up Anthony, Skya, Donna, Loren and Dee Abbate.  None of their style of art matches this painting.  This Abbate artist is most probably one of the Abbates in the 4th to 6th generation of Niccole Dell' Abbate.

Back of the painting

The back of the painting tells a story. This sticker tells us that the painting was framed in Cape Town.  It looks like "ELLIS FRAMERS" framed the art. They were in suite 105, Volkskas Building, Adderley Street, Cape Town.  They advertise with this sticker that they import Oil paintings.  The oil painting (canvas) was pasted on hardboard.  Hardboard was first produced in 1880. It is thus difficult to date this painting but imported as a canvas, pasted on Hardboard and framed about 1920, then sold to a buyer in Cape Town. The art is realistic with a very slight touch of impressionism.  Abbate painted this painting with a brush effect.

ANTICA FABBRICA DI PANE E PASTA, translated from Italian into English (Old Factory in Bread and Pasta).

Newspaper reader, Mother and children were painted more realistic, whilst the figures further away were painted with a slight impressionism.

The dimensions of the frame 830 X 620 mm, ART 690 X 485 mm. Width of double frame 75 mm x 32 mm high.
