Inspiration Behind the Painting:

I'm always inspired by a magnificent sunset. This painting came about when I was out driving in the Klein Karoo.

We passed the most spectacular lavender fields just as the sun was setting. I got an idea from there to try and reinterpret what I saw.

I needed a vast area to paint on, so I went for a larger than normal canvas. I wanted to really express the colours and vigour of a South African sunset — to do it justice and draw the viewer into the painting.

I wanted the rows of lavender to give a sense of depth as your eye travels to the center of the piece.
