MIKE TALJAARD ART

To me this is an acient wooden carving of art of a mother and her baby. The carving on mother and baby, might be a carving of mother Mary and baby Jesus in the history of the Bible, who knows and who can say for certain? The wood weighs 2.5 kg, looks sturdy and has a wallnut colour.

The back of the wooden carving and is hangable

Lengthe is 515 mm, from side to side is 220 mm. Height is 32 mm.

The artist signed the art, It might be L J  Hirath.  According to search engines, approximately 16 people in the world carry that surname at the moment.  Although there is no dot after "L" and the "J", who knows how a name would have been signed many, many years ago. The "L" is carved out a little lower that the width of the top line, to fit above the Carved "J".  Next is the "J" and the "h", which was carved over the width of the two lines.  The next letter was a bit difficult to verify, but viewing it as incursive, the top part of the "h" has the small line from left to right, then it comes down over two lines.  The right side of the "small letter h" is carved out like an inverted "s".  The balance of the bottom line is easy to verify and spells "idath" and I see the surname as "hidath". Left in the top line is carved out "1711".  Could that be the year 1711?.  Who can say for certain?

If you turn the wooden carving art on its front, on the back, there is another rough carving top left that the art is dated the year 1711.  It is carved as in the above picture from top to bottom, "17" then an apostrophe and then "11" as in 17'11.  The art has manuel saw marks on it as if it was sawn manually and not a modern machine saw.

The wooden carving art has on both sides, more carvings as is shown in the top two pictures
