Due to the poor printing of the original 1907 edition this volume of the series is not a facsimile. It has been re-set in new type and printed by letterpress.

The index was prepared by Miss D Saul for the Johannesburg Library.

The eight illustrations are facsimile reproductions of selected engravings from James Backhouse's 'A Narrative of a visit to Mauritius and South Africa', with a tint added for this edition and are intended simply to provide some atmosphere and feeling of the physical environment of the O.F.S.
