Frida Boccara (1940-1996) was a real artist with a great heart. Many may remember her as a co-winner in the 1969 Eurovision song contest, with "Un jour, un enfant' (No 12 on this CD). A charming song of a child learning about the world. She was more than a flash in the pan. She performed and recorded in many languages, from Dutch to Russian. A reminder of Nana Mouskouri ? A gentle voice with a message.
This album is eclectic, for example with a French rendition of 'Johnny Comes Marching Home' (No 5) to Brel's' 'Ne me quitte pas' (No 13). One song which many may recall, 'Les moulins de mon coeur' (No 3), made famous in the US as 'The Windmills of My Mind', written for Boccara. Another song, 'La croix, l'etoile er le croissant' (No 2), really appropriate at this time of deadly conflict - a message similar to Enrico Macias- of building bridges not walls across different religious traditions and cultures. Both North African Jews transplanted to France. Another favourite, just for the sheer melody, is, 'Pour vivre ensemble' (No 14).
A compilation of 25 songs, about 73 minutes in length, sung by a remarkably fine and committed voice, about childhood, love, tolerance, and the vagaries of life. Boccara, tragically deceased, only at 55 years of age, in 1996, of a pulmonary infection.
