This thoroughly researched and beautifully designed history traces the development of one of the oldest and finest of South African Jewrys charitable institutions, the Cape Jewish Orphanage, from its founding in 1911 through its metamorphosis into the Oranjia Jewish Child and Youth Centre to its Centenary year in 2011 and beyond. The past century has seen it change from a handful of orphans to a large institution of 100 children to more intimate Group Homes and finally to a single Home for children in need of care. Firmly rooted in values of compassion and tzedakah, Oranjias story has finally been recorded. Based on the archival records of Oranjia and of the Kaplan Centre for Jewish Studies and Research at the University of Cape Town as well as persona memoirs and interviews, this handsome new volume in full colour, showcases historical posters, plans and images that have never before been featured in any other work of South African Jewish history.
