In the 1970s, travelling in the US, the young South African George Halamandres was so inspired by what he saw that he decided to bring back something new to the country: an American-themed steak and burger restaurant that offered quality and excellent service at an affordable price.
Little did he know when he opened The Black Steer restaurant in Yeoville, Johannesburg that this would be beginning of the hugely successful Steers chain and the international franchising company Famous Brands.
From Corner Café to JSE Giant: The Famous Brands Story traces the fortunes of this company and of the Halamandres family that built it up: mothers and daughters, uncles and sons, and grandchildren. This Greek dynasty is behind some of South Africa’s best-known food brands – Milky Lane, Steers, Debonairs, Mugg&Bean, and Wimpy. Famous Brands was first to successfully bring the franchise model into the local market, succeeding where many international companies had failed.
That first small Black Steer has grown into a JSE-listed company with an annual revenue of over R2 billion. And the Halamandres family still keeps an eye over Grandfather George’s legacy.
